Robocall: latest reports

Calls that play a recorded message, often about warranties, accounts, offers or "problems" you are asked to press a key to resolve.

Common signs

  • A pause or click before a recorded voice begins.
  • Instructions to "press 1" to speak to someone or "press 2" to be removed.
  • A generic greeting that does not use your name.

What to do

  • Hang up without pressing anything.
  • Block the number, and use your carrier's spam-call tools or a call-blocking app.
  • Report it so others can see how often it calls.

What to avoid

  • Do not press a key to be "removed". It can mark your line as active.
  • Do not give details to the person who answers after you press a key.

Questions people ask

Are recorded sales calls allowed?

In the US, prerecorded sales calls to a mobile phone generally require your prior written permission, with limited exceptions. Many robocalls come from callers who ignore these rules.

Will the Do Not Call Registry stop them?

It limits calls from legitimate telemarketers. Scammers and illegal robocallers ignore it, so blocking and reporting still matter.
